Rikku is the very first cosplay I ever wore, in 2010. Back then I had bought it ready-made, knowing nothing about the craft; I already loved the character and her energy, and the urge to make things myself came later. In 2015 I rebuilt the costume by hand, piece by piece, for the satisfaction of designing it and for greater faithfulness to the original design. The duo photo dates from that same year, with my sister as Yuna.

The scarf
The scarf is the central piece of the costume. Knitted entirely by hand, it was dyed in a gradient in a single pass on the finished knit. I preferred this method to a knitted gradient using yarns of different colours: progressive dyeing gives a continuous transition where switching from one yarn to another leaves a visible cut.
The patterns and the boots
I drafted each pattern piece by hand, comparing the proportions of the reference illustrations so the seams would fall in the right place. Each fabric was chosen for its hold and its colour.
For the boots, I took a store-bought pair, removed the outer panels with a cutter, and dressed the remaining shell with the costume fabric.
